Ancient civilizations of the world have long been accredited for realizing the endless applications and natural benefits of the cannabis plant. From the ancient Chinese silk road to ancient Egyptian medicinal innovation, cannabis has been one of the most useful traded commodities in world history. During the last Ice Age, hunters and gatherers traversed the globe into the Americas across land bridges carrying in hand a variety of supplies and natural resources used as healing remedies that stemmed from the Cannabaceae family. The first native inhabitants of the Americas are known to have used the natural plant and herb in peace pipes for healing inflammation and other illnesses and for use in spiritual ceremonies and tribal celebrations long before the Plymouth Colony was developed. The Age of Sail played a major role in the expansion of ideas and international trade. Cannabis became a key commodity in the growth and development of America’s industrial revolution. Cannabis hemp plantations were grown and manufactured commercially across the nation, essentially as the number one cash crop of the land.
Land of the Free
In 1776, a nation of patriots cemented their rights to govern themselves and choose the outcome of domestic matters by signing the Declaration of Independence. Although written on parchment, with drafts said to be composed on hemp paper, the Constitution and Bill of Rights were also monumental documents for democracy. However, the will of power and underlining interest of a few, remained resolute at the helm. The influence and aftermath of the transatlantic slave trade tilted the domestic balance of power, liberty & justice in these United States, from its inception. The runoff of the slave trade, which stained the roots of America left her splintered and divided by the same folks who declared the independence, of a land of the free. The will of power and special interest wrote, “Article I Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution of 1787,” which declared that for the purposes of Congress, enslaved blacks in a state would be counted as three-fifth the number of white inhabitants of that state. The three-fifths clause and others helped shape legislation and all three branches of government, notably until the Civil War. Free slave labor was a pivotal catalyst in the growth of this nation and early agriculture’s growth of tobacco, cotton, sugar and cannabis hemp plantations.
Cannabis plantations were encouraged and used throughout the War to help treat the wounds and injuries of soldiers. Up until and during the Civil War cannabis was commonly available for many applications. Then, the same plant that helped build a nation was weaponized to retain social dominance, secure new industry and control immigration. The attack began in 1906 and heightened through the 20s and 30s with special interest from paper execs, pharma execs, plastic execs, research backed cannabis outlaws, media, “Reefer Madness” and the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. If history has taught anything, it has proven time and again that human nature has the propensity to yield the power of a few against the best interest of the masses. At times, without regard of its negative outcome or catastrophic implications. Since the beginning of time, human beings have been dictating and in turn manipulating the rights and free will of their country folk for personal gain. The powers that be have stretched their interests and will of influence internationally for generations, virtually reshaping entire lineages forever. Ultimately, creating a framework which inhibits all humans their declared rights of due process and equality. The same rights that were attributed in both the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem. And yet, we pledge loyalty to country.
Power to the People
The will of power and propaganda have controlled the people for far too long. As it relates to cannabis, the will of the people is being heard. To date, 15 states have legalized its casual use, while 36 states have permitted only medicinal use for now. In 2019, U.S. sales accounted for 81% of total sales worldwide. Analysts predict that the industry will grow to reach between $50 billion and $200 billion over the next decade. This presents a significant opportunity to those with access to the necessary resources to succeed in this reemerging commodity space. U.S. Cannabis offers an extraordinary platform as a beacon of light, to empower the people and inspire the inner grit and determination. Cannabis has been well documented for its superior industrial uses and medicinal applications, and non-bias research is finally unlocking the true treasures hidden within its complex plant genome.
